A vintage Moorcroft jug in the Orchid pattern by Walter Moorcroft.
Quite a substantial item with a height (to the top of the handle) of 120mm, a diameter (across the widest section of the body but not including the handle) of 112mm and a weight of 448g.
The orchid pattern was originally developed by William Moorcroft c1937 and further developed by Walter Moorcroft in the 1940's and 1950's .
Regarding age it can be difficult to assess with absolute certainty as some production runs could be quite long, and it was not until 1990 that Moorcroft began using year cyphers to show when an item was actually made.
As a there is no year cypher on the bowl the latest possible date of manufacture would be 1989 however there are a number of ways to narrow this down.
The MOORCROFT and MADE IN ENGLAND backstamps suggest a date range c1949 to 1986.
Referral to reference book states the orchid design was last used in 1972.
From the detail above the age can reasonably be assessed as c1950's/60's and in any event of genuine vintage age.
Condition: Vintage items may have imperfections due to the manufacturing processes of the day, usage perhaps over many years and how an item has been stored. Small surface marks or areas of wear etc may be present but any significant issues will always be highlighted in the description, and any questions will be answered as accurately as possible.
This jug has been closely inspected and assessed as in excellent vintage condition.
The floral pattern showing two orchid versions on the dark blue ground makes for a very attractive item which should prove a worthy addition to many a collection of Moorcroft pottery. Given its mid range size it might also be suitable to display as a stand alone item.
